This story is two or three years old, but its one of my few finished works and I still find it to be decent. I actually have the bones of a story to take place after this, but its never really gone anywhere. I hope you like it.

I don’t know why I’m writing this. You won’t believe me. Probably you’ll brush it off as some other story that’s written as if it actually happened. *Never mind*. I’m a veterinarian for a small town, out in West Virginia. Most of the people there are farmers, only living close by, really. That’s how this… story begins. I was closing up my business for the night, and had just finished locking the door when I turned and saw him. The most obvious thing about him was that he was less than half my height. The next was his triangular ears on top of his head.
“My wife’s giving birth.” He said. “Now.” I realized he had some kind of fur on his face, though he was wearing clothes. It was dark and I couldn’t see well. “And she’s not human either.” He enunciated.
“Okay.” I said. I couldn’t really abandon him. We started down the road as fast as we could. “Don’t you have a car?” I asked. Dumb, huh.
“Took a faster way.” he replied grumpily “It’s outside of town.”
“Why.”
“Convenience.” We continued in silence. I looked up distractedly and noticed the lack of stars. We usually have good stargazing out here. But there weren’t any clouds. It was just dark for no reason. Pitch black shadows covered the buildings on either side of us, crossing over onto the streets. I don’t think he noticed. He looked… distracted, scared, angry, concerned. I couldn’t tell.
“Sssimeon, SSSon of sssivuel.” A pair of crimson eyes burned in the shadows. Simeon, who I guessed was my strange companion, began walking even faster. “Father of none.” The voice was of a multitude, and more eyes began to appear in the darkness. Shadows seemed to move like serpents, falling upon Simeon, who would throw one off only to find two in its place. “Ssso it must remain.” Simeon was nearly covered by the shadows.
“I…Don’t…Have…Time for this.” He roared in fury, and threw out his arm. What happened next convinced me this wasn’t some prank involving midgets. You simply couldn’t copy it. From his fingers came…rays of light. Where ever they struck, shadows were thrown away like nothing. And the colors. You can’t see them in reality. Infrared and ultraviolet, greens so intense they should be different colors, ones that can’t be described at all. “Take my hand.” Simeon yelled, stretching out his arm. I grabbed his wrist so tight I thought I might break the tiny thing. We started running, straight into the shadows. I could feel their mass on me trying to drag both of us down, I felt my death ahead of me, only an eternity of darkness. Simeon roared something and there was a flash of light. Then we were there, at what must have been Simeon’s house. I was panting heavily.
“Come on.” Simeon said. He led me inside to the room where his wife was. She looked a bit like Simeon, only, well, feminine, and not very happy. I'll spare you the details here. It wasn't very pleasant, but I did my job. When it was done, I handed the wife her new child and left the room. Simeon was waiting for me.
"It’s a boy." I told him. "Well, unless…"
"It is." he nodded. "Well um, thanks for your help. I think we can handle it from here." He gave me a check and shook my hand, before going in to see his son. I left the house, not asking for a ride, and began the walk home. I was used to walking around the area. I noticed a runic circle scratched in the dirt around the house. It barely registered among all the other weirdness. I was out of sight of Simeon's house when it stopped me. One of the shadow-things with glowing red eyes, towering over me like some mythical serpent. "Doom." It said "Dooooom" I froze where I was, heart pounding. I didn't do anything, just waited for someone else to end this craziness. Then, as sudden as it came, the thing left, laughing as if it had killed something small and cute. Then I ran, until my legs gave out and I cried until I could stand again. I don't know how long it was, but I eventually reached a farmer's house, and he gave me a lift back to my house, though not without making sure I wasn't some kind of serial killer. I told him my car had broken down. When I got home I went to bed on my couch and didn't open up my business the next morning. When the local newspaper came around, it included a mention of a "Bizarre light show", which had apparently upset some people. I never saw Simeon again, unless he's also a shapeshifter.
